DENTAL HYGIENIST
What does a Hygienist do?
Dental hygienists are a critical part of the dental team. Some patients spend more time with a hygienist than any other dental professional.
Hygienists perform cleanings and examinations to detect oral diseases. They also educate patients on oral hygiene and preventative care. With the proper training, North Carolina hygienists can even administer anesthesia.
Specifically, if you become a hygienist, you’ll:
- remove plaque, calculus, and stains from teeth.
- examine gums for signs of disease.
- apply fluoride and sealants to prevent decay.
- take dental x-rays.
- remove sutures.
- formulate treatment plans.
- give oral hygiene instructions.
- have the option to teach, do research, or work in dental sales.
Why choose a career in Dental Hygiene?
You’ll get to help people improve their health, earn a competitive salary in a growing field without needing a four-year degree, and enjoy a flexible lifestyle.
What type of person makes a good hygienist?

A Stickler for Details

Flexible and Resilient
Dexterity is critical when you’re working in a space as small as the mouth. The slightest movement can make a difference. You also need to realize the physical demands of the job – repetitive motions, being bent over in odd positions for extended periods of time and sitting for much of the day.
Enthusiastic and Encouraging
It’s your job to educate patients on the importance of oral health and its connection to overall health. You’ll help them change behaviors to improve their oral health.
